about

Next up on the eatmybeat roster for 2018 is the multi-talented Croft, returning this time for a full length EP alongside two heavy duty remixes. It was inevitable that the Nottingham based production powerhouse would return with ‘Ghosts’ - a 4 tracker demonstrating the range and versatility of this young producer, as well as showcasing a variety of techno flavours.

Straight to business with the opener, termed at HQ as ‘low and slow’; a four-to-the- floor techno roller with an ever rising melody that heightens as the track unfolds. Intermittent textures weave in and out between gritty 303 notes, adding tension and taste. An ethereal vocal sample emerges from the subterranean landscape; reminiscent of Max Cooper-esque mystery, the vocal a whispering ode to tracks namesake – “I Can See Shooting Stars”

Next up and on heavy rotation at EMB, “Drifting” carries through the eerie atmosphere explored in ‘I Can See Shooting Stars’, this time with expertly mixed hi-hats and shakers that brings a highly uplifting energy to the song. Warm, yet robotic melodies guide the listener through the track, capturing a heightened sense of emotion and again, tension, until the track culminates in an all-out crescendo of the high frequencies, driven by a round and punchy bass line. A secret weapon.

Croft resumes his role as a story teller, expressing themes of love, loss and lessons learnt in “Alone”. Excellent sub-bass stabs provide a real groove to the track. Meanwhile, encapsulating ticks, whirrs and hats that enchant the listener into an almost trance-like state, giving the vocal that rides through the track an elevated sense of passion and intensity. This track should be closely listened to from start to finish to truly grasp the essence and intended message.

Finally, “With Shadows of Ghosts” concludes the release with a complete twist, drawing inspiration from a gritty low end and tech-heavy sound currently coming out of the UK underground. Croft truly demonstrates the wide range of his production capability by transforming the themes previously expressed to something a lot edgier and dance-floor ready. A master-class in the mixdown.

Remixes come from Bristol duo and heavyweights Yakona, giving the opening track a workout, yet building on the emotional tone first set by the original artist. Straight out of Russia, the mysterious Rnbws brings a different shade with a club-ready version of ‘Alone’, paying homage to old electro sounds and breakbeat patterns guaranteed to whip any dancefloor into a frenzy.
